There's nowhere quite like South Africa for a top-notch safari experience, and your safari begins now – lucky you! We'll let you know what lies ahead, then get this trip of a lifetime started.

Our nomination for South Africa's premier malaria-free safari destination is Madikwe Game Reserve, which extends across 750km² of remote semi-arid savannah bordering Botswana. Here, you stand a fair chance of seeing all of the Big Five, including black rhino and leopard, and it's also one of the most reliable places to look for the endangered African wild dog. Unlike many other state-owned reserves, there's very little crowding in Madikwe, because it can only be explored on guided game drives, and day visitors are not permitted.

Tented camp Inside Madikwe Game Reserve

Thakadu River Camp is your base for exploring Madikwe Game Reserve. The tented suites have wooden floors and lovely, large terraces, and they're gorgeous places to rest at the end of your safari day. The camp has a swimming pool, restaurant and the location, in the heart of Madikwe's incredible wildlife country, is second to none.

Day 2

Madikwe Game Reserve

Early Morning Game Drive, Madikwe Game Reserve

Put on some warm clothes and enjoy an early morning game drive. This is the perfect time to experience the wildlife and the landscapes they inhabit. The light is soft and warm – perfect for photography – and most animals are out and about, and active. If you’re not an early riser, you’ll definitely want to make an exception here.
